Vacancies for ‘How to be a Young North East Naturalist’ Nature Rangers

NHSN are seeking two passionate Nature Rangers to engage and inspire school children across the North East

Can you engage, excite and inspire children with a love for nature?

We need two people that are friendly, calm, and enthusiastic with children and teachers. We want people who can inspire children to discover nature wherever they are. It would be a bonus to us if you can identify common wild animals and flowers but your approach with children is more important than your knowledge of wildlife.

Local teachers told us that children wanted help to discover more about local nature, and teachers wanted support in developing and running outdoor activities that develop a child’s confidence, self-esteem and wonder of nature through inspiring hands-on experiences. Being child-focused, you will work with teachers and children to co-create engaging indoor and outdoor activities for Key Stages 1 and 2 of the national curriculum.

Working with five local primary schools, in the Newcastle, Cramlington and Blyth area, you will enthuse a wide variety of children with different abilities, backgrounds and enthusiasm for nature close to home. You will support children by building on their individual strengths and interests to fulfil their potential and passion for natural history. You will enable the children to visit Gosforth Nature Reserve and/or the Great North Museum: Hancock.

The children loved Gosforth Nature Reserve and some even commented that it was the best trip that they had been on! It gave the children the opportunity to enjoy being outdoors and to hear interesting people who are passionate about the reserve, animals and environment they nurture.

Teacher Feedback

‘How to be a Young North East Naturalist’ is funded by the National Heritage Lottery Fund.  You will join the Natural History Society of Northumbria (NHSN) team, a regional charity, inspiring wonder in the natural world from the Tees to the Tweed since 1829.

You will work flexibly from Gosforth Nature Reserve, local schools, your home and the NHSN’s office at the GNM: Hancock.  You will need transport to regularly visit five local schools.
