We are looking for an enthusiastic and resourceful person to join our team as an Assistant Warden at Blean Woods and Seasalter Levels nature reserves in the East Kent area. The work will be focused across an extensive and diverse range of SSSI designated land that includes close to 800 hectares of woodland, heathland, wet grassland and scrub habitats. This is an exciting role that covers the management of the RSPB’s largest woodland reserve in England and a wet grassland site on the cusp of restoration. 

About the role:

You will be assisting in the day to day running of reserve operations, volunteer management and ecological monitoring. You will support the creation and maintenance of habitat for nationally important species including the heath fritillary butterfly, nightingale, lesser spotted woodpecker, dormice, as well as lapwing, redshank and shrill carder bee. The role will also help to support work across both reserves for the Green Recovery Challenge Fund - an ambitious landscape-scale project to create and restore habitats to boost biodiversity in a landscape already compromised by the effects of climate change. 

Key areas of work will include:

•    Habitat management as defined by the reserve’s management plan and agri-environment agreement.
•    Leading and inspiring the reserve’s volunteer team.
•    Monitoring of key species and habitats.
•    Maintaining high standards of health and safety to minimise risk to the RSPB and to ensure understanding and compliance of health and safety while undertaking duties.
•    Monitoring and maintaining reserve operations as compliant according to the various agreements and standards.
•    Maintenance of machinery to ensure they are operating safely and efficiently.
•    Maintenance of livestock and other infrastructure to ensure it is fit for purpose.
•    Collaborate with a wide range of stakeholders from wider team members, neighbours, graziers, Reserve Ecologists etc.
•    General administration and report writing associated with all of the above to ensure admin and reports are up to date and systematically organised.

Essential skills, knowledge and experience:

•    Energy, adaptability and the desire to achieve.
•    Experience of estate management.
•    Well organised approach to work including developing and effective prioritisation of workplans and workloads.
•    The ability to work unsupervised, within a team or leading a team.
•    Implementing and updating health and safety records and assessments.
•    Experience in the safe operation and maintenance of machinery, tools and equipment.
•    Knowledge of woodland and heathland habitat management.
•    Knowledge of lowland wet grassland habitat management for breeding and wintering waders and wildfowl.

Desirable skills, knowledge and experience:

•    Experience of working with contractors/graziers.
•    Experience of biological monitoring.
•    Knowledge of the requirements of agri-environment and cross-compliance regulations.
•    Knowledge of livestock management.
