This is a fantastic opportunity for an individual passionate about the Welsh Landscape to work across RSPB's teams at Lake Vyrnwy in supporting the delivery of RSPB's habitat and species objectives.

About the Role

You will work across the 10,000ha estate which surrounds Lake Vyrnwy, owned by water company Hafren Dyfrdwy and managed in partnership with RSPB. The landscape has a diverse range of habitats, supports rare and protected species and contains a number of upland farms including the largest organic farm in England and Wales which is managed by the RSPB.

This role is funded through a grant to remove small, scattered, self seeded conifers from the SSSI moorland, this work will form the focus of the five month contract. The successful candidate will also support the work of the wider Lake Vyrnwy team, with general estate maintenance, supporting the farm operation, maintenance of visitor and built asset and supporting volunteer work parties.

The successful candidate will need to be comfortable undertaking physical, practical working in the Welsh uplands during the winter and be happy to undertake the following tasks:

  • Clearing small scattered conifers from 1200ha of uplands with hand tools/chainsaw.
  • Maintenance of buildings and infrastructure to ensure they are operating as required.
  • Maintenance of livestock infrastructure and assisting with the welfare of livestock to ensure we meet all animal welfare and cross compliance legislation.
  • Routine operation, record keeping, servicing and maintenance of machinery and vehicles to ensure they are operating safely and efficiently.
  • Habitat management and grounds maintenance to ensure conservation and visitor experience targets are being met.
  • Keeping up to date health and safety records to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations and to enable improvements to be set.
  • Being responsible for completing all above tasks in compliance with Health & Safety policy to minimise risk to the RSPB.

What we need form you

Essential:

  • Practical experience in delivering land and estate management works.
  • use of machinery and equipment operations associated with estate management.
  • Maintaining vehicles, machinery, tools and equipment to agreed standards.

Desirable:

  • Upland hill navigation
  • Knowledge/understanding of nature conservation.
  • Knowledge/understanding of woodland management.
  • Livestock management.
  • Lantra or equivalent qualification in chainsaws, brushcutters, ATV, knapsack sprayers and vehicles.
  • Experience of working with Volunteers

Additional Information

This role is a Fixed-Term position, Full-Time role for 5 months working 37.5 hours per week. 

Shared accommodation on site could be available for a suitable candidate.
