The Somerset Coast to Levels is one of the UK’s most important wetland landscapes – what we call a Waterscape. WWT already plays an important role in this Waterscape, through the management of WWT Steart Marshes and the Somerset Climate Resilient Coast project (https://www.wwt.org.uk/our-work/projects/climate-resilience-in-somerset/), and together with our conservation partners we aspire to make it bigger, better and more connected for the benefit of wetland wildlife.

The rural landscape and farming communities of the Coastal Levels offer exciting opportunities for transition to a sustainable, resilient and wildlife-rich future, with wetlands at the heart.  New initiatives, such as Biodiversity Net Gain, the Environmental Land Management scheme and investment in nature-based solutions, are making this possible.  Could you be the perfect person to drive forward nature’s recovery in this area?  If so, we’d love to hear from you.

Role Outline

You will take the lead on engaging, advising and supporting farmers and other landowners on the Somerset Coastal Levels with the transition to sustainable and resilient land management which helps to secure nature’s recovery.  By building strong relationships with local land managers and communities, keeping up-to-date with new schemes and initiatives, and contributing to local conservation forums, you will be a trusted source of information and guidance on the available opportunities for wetland creation and restoration, sustainable agriculture and nature-based solutions.

By developing and delivering creative and stimulating engagement activities and offering a suite of support services, such as baseline survey, you will be empowering landholders to progress the transition to nature-led sustainable land management.  You will also be encouraged and supported to develop new project ideas to expand and build on your successes.

About You

You will be an extremely committed person who cares deeply about the success and impact of your work. You’ll be enthusiastic about landscape-scale wetland conservation and have creative ideas for how to engage and support farmers and the wider rural community.

You’ll be a real people person, able to nurture trusted relationships with land managers, colleagues in other teams and counterparts in other organisations. You’ll also be a great communicator, with a talent for promoting and advocating your work to a wide range of stakeholders, including people who might be hard to engage and win over.

You’ll have experience of working positively and successfully with farmers and the ability to empathise whilst maintaining professional integrity. You will enjoy working in an organisation with a strong “can-do” attitude that wants to make a difference and is willing to run with good ideas.

If this sounds like you then we would love to hear from you. Come and join us in delivering our vision of a world where healthy wetland nature thrives and enriches lives.

  • Contributory pension scheme (conditions apply)
