*The location is flexible, but ideally, we'd like you to come to either the Edinburgh office or the head office (Sandy, Bedfordshire) at least one day a week.

What's the role about?

This role forms part of a team of GIS analysts in our Conservation Data Department, providing a map-making and GIS analysis service. You will be responsible for undertaking our more complex spatial analysis requests, including image classification and other remote sensing work. You will work closely with colleagues across the RSPB to determine their requirements and find the most suitable approach to answer their questions. Your outputs will include visually engaging and informative maps for a range of audiences, ensuring that RSPB has an impact when presenting our case and telling our stories.

GIS is a rapidly evolving field. You must have an interest in staying current with key advances in the field, such as new tools, techniques, and datasets. You will share useful developments with GIS users across the organisation, and where relevant, implement beneficial changes to the way we work. You will showcase our GIS service, ensuring that potential users are aware of what is offered, and how it can be of value.

You will also be part of a group responsible for ensuring that spatial data held by RSPB are updated regularly, are properly documented, and are available to the right people. 

What we need from you

Essentials:

- Expert knowledge of GIS software (ideally ArcGIS) and scripting (e.g. Python, Google Earth Engine).
- Knowledge of remote sensing data and techniques.
- Knowledge of GIS, data and information management good practice.
- The ability to communicate clearly and concisely.
- Excellent problem-solving skills for technical problems.
- An interest in novel innovative GIS technologies, and ability to share and implement useful developments in the field. 

Desirables:

- Masters's degree in GIS, geography or conservation or similar, or equivalent experience.
- Knowledge of current conservation issues and priorities, and the value of GIS for these.
- Experience conducting remote sensing analysis, including image classification.
- A high level of expertise in spatial analysis and map design.


Additional Information

This is a Fixed-Term Full-Time role for 37.5 hours per week. 

The RSPB reserves the right to extend or make this role permanent without further advertising dependent on business needs at the end of the contract term.
