Are you green-fingered with a passion for nature conservation? We’re looking for a part-time Tree Nursery Assistant to work in our native tree and wildflower nursery at Naddle Farm at Haweswater.

Situated in the Eastern Lake District, Haweswater is a mosaic of soaring fells, rushing rivers, flower-strewn crags, bogs and meadows. In partnership with landowner United Utilities, we are working at a landscape-scale to restore habitats for the benefit of people, water and wildlife.

What's the role about?

The nursery at Naddle Farm is a vital part of the Haweswater operation, producing a wide range of native species that have been grown from seeds and cuttings sourced from the local area.

Supporting the Tree Nursery Officer, and working alongside other site staff and volunteers, the Tree Nursery Assistant will involve giving the nursery’s plants the best possible start in life, weeding, watering, potting up and processing them in readiness for planting back out in the wider landscape. The role will also help with seed collection and planting out, and with occasional other estate management tasks.

This will be a predominantly hand’s-on, outdoor role, so we’re looking for someone who is hard working, happy in all weathers and has experience and knowledge of horticulture and plant propagation.

As part of a large and multi-disciplinary site workforce the successful candidate will be expected to make a positive contribution to an inclusive and supportive team culture.

Required qualifications, knowledge, skills and experience:

  • Experience of growing/horticulture in either a personal or professional capacity.
  • Enthusiastic approach to work.
  • Ability to respond positively to colleagues needs and feedback.
  • Ability to build and maintain positive working relationships and to work well as part of a team.
  • Interest in nature conservation.
  • Able to solve problems and to work on own initiative.

This is a Fixed-Term, Part-Time role for 22.5 hours per week for a period of 18 months.

The RSPB reserves the right to extend or make this role permanent without further advertising dependent on business needs at the end of the contract term.

We are looking to conduct interviews for this position on 19th June 2023. For further information please contact jo.chamberlain@rspb.org.uk

As part of this application process you will be asked to provide a copy of your CV and complete an application form including evidence on how you meet the skills, knowledge, and experience listed above.
