This is an initial nine-month fixed term contract, with the potential for extension.

This position is ideally based at WWT Slimbridge but would be suitable for flexible/hybrid working with regular visits to the project area.

Role Context
The ‘Flourishing Floodplains’ project will restore threatened wetland habitats across a 6,400ha landscape in the Severn & Avon Vales, helping to increase biodiversity, improve soil and water quality, and combat climate change. It will also support the recovery of two rapidly declining species - the Eurasian curlew and European eel - by promoting a transition to wildlife-friendly farming and building the evidence to inform future action.

By working with farmers and landowners to manage the newly restored wetland habitats, and connecting local people with the floodplain landscape through volunteering and citizen science, the project will create a network of “floodplain champions” with the knowledge and skills to continue this work in future.

This almost £1million pound project is key to furthering our ambitions under our strategic Waterscapes Programme has been awarded a grant from the Green Recovery Challenge Fund. It is led by WWT and delivered in partnership with the Farming & Wildlife Advisory Group South West and the Floodplain Meadows Partnership led by the Open University.

Role outline
Your role will be responsible for the coordination, delivery and successful completion of the ‘Flourishing Floodplains’ project and by working positively with all partners and stakeholders ensuring that it not only achieves WWTs ambitious aims but also complies with the conditions of the funding and all regulations around delivering the work including gaining formal statutory consents.

You will work with all Project Managers both internally and across the partnership to monitor progress of each delivery area and regularly report this through WWTs Project Management Governance Structure. You will be responsible to the WWTs Project Sponsor and will also work with the expertise of WWT Unit Heads to deliver organisational strategic objectives. You will be responsible for overall budget management and for coordinating all grant claims with support from WWTs Conservation Admin, Supporter Development and Finance Teams.

You will have matrix management of various sub-project managers and project staff and be able to advise on both Health & Safety and CDM best practice.

It is anticipated that you will have a respect and working knowledge for the natural environment and be experienced in UK wetland habitats and species. You will be an experienced conservationist, adept at building links between NGO partners, local and national statutory stakeholders, and local communities. The successful candidate will be at the heart of one of the most high profile conservation initiatives in the region, and will need to be inspiring, collaborative, diplomatic and energetic.

The Green Recovery Challenge Fund is funded by Defra and is being delivered by The National Lottery Heritage Fund in partnership with Natural England and the Environment Agency.
