About us

Groundwork is a leading regeneration charity, working through partnership to create communities in which people are proud to live and work.  We help people to carry out thousands of diverse, locally-led projects each year. Projects that tackle climate change and help people out of fuel poverty. That bring out the best in young people by helping them to improve their local area. Projects that build stronger communities by improving green space or get people back into work and create green jobs.

The Wild Oysters Project is a national oyster restoration initiative, developed by the Zoological Society of London, Blue Marine Foundation and British Marine, funded by the Postcode Dream Trust and delivered locally in Tyne & Wear by Groundwork North East & Cumbria.

About the roles

The project aims to create oyster restoration sites in three locations in the UK: Tyne & Wear in NE England, Firth of Clyde in Scotland, and Conwy Bay in Wales. At each hub, oyster nurseries have been installed across two sites, and the seabed will be restored with the aim of creating oyster reefs. The oyster nurseries form an important tool in the education and engagement programme, in which local communities and schools engage with native oyster biology and culture, and with wider marine conservation issues.

Project Officer:

As Wild Oyster Project Officer you will be responsible for implementation of the Tyne & Wear Wild Oyster Rehabilitation Hub, care and maintenance of native oyster nurseries, restoration of wild native oyster habitat, delivering regular public outreach and education sessions to engage the local community with the Wild Oysters project, and leading citizen science-based monitoring and reporting.

Project Assistant:

As Wild Oyster Project Assistant you will support the Project Officer with the delivery of regular public outreach and education sessions, restoration fieldwork including monitoring the oyster nurseries, and relevant administration and communication tasks (recording ecological data, booking school visits, tracking project targets, and data analysis and visualisation, social media posting, etc.).

This role is subject to an Enhanced Disclosure endorsed by the Disclosure and Barring Service

About you

Project Officer:

We want someone with experience of working as part of a science/conservation/policy project and of delivering marine conservation or research projects. You will also have experience of carrying out fieldwork and delivering successful educational outreach sessions and public engagement activities. Your role will require you to have excellent communication skills as well as a good grasp of relevant marine conservation issues. Experience leading others would be an advantage.

Project Assistant:

We want someone who is comfortable delivering education sessions with school groups and community events. Your role will require regular travel to the nursery sites and working outdoors near water. You will also have experience of carrying out fieldwork in a marine or environmental context, and be a good team worker.
