(Fieldwork from Gloucestershire to Shropshire)

WWT is a leader in threatened species recovery. We have recently reintroduced Eurasian cranes to Somerset, and they are now nesting in western Britain for the first time in 400 years. We are implementing a translocation programme for black-tailed godwits in eastern England. Internationally, we lead the ground-breaking headstarting programme for the Critically Endangered spoon-billed sandpiper, and the reintroduction programme for the world’s rarest duck, the Madagascar pochard.

We are now launching a conservation programme for Eurasian Curlew, the most pressing bird conservation issue in the UK. The first phase of the work involves establishing a recovery programme in the Severn region. This will involve translocation; working with partners and land managers to create and improve curlew habitat; designing innovative conservation methods; and engaging local communities. All of this work will be underpinned by scientific evidence.

WWT’s Conservation Science team is seeking an energetic and innovative scientist to implement the field research that will underpin our new Curlew Recovery project in the Severn region.

You will be responsible for implementing a fieldwork programme for the wild curlew population in the region. This will require territory mapping, and nest and chick monitoring. You will also implement a post-release monitoring programme for translocated curlews to be released as fledglings in the region.

You will have a degree in a biological subject or equivalent expertise. You will have experience of ornithological fieldwork, ideally on wading birds. Above all, you will be an enthusiastic conservationist, a committed fieldworker, and a problem-solver.

The Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust (WWT) creates and protects wetland habitats for people and wildlife.  We save species around the world from extinction; our nine UK Wetland Centres inspire thousands of visitors to enjoy being close to nature. WWT’s rapidly growing Conservation Directorate comprises 40 staff, working nationally and internationally to deliver the Trust’s strategy, from threatened species conservation to wetland ecosystem services.

In return for your hard work and dedication you’ll enjoy a wide range of benefits including:
- 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays (pro rata)
- Contributory pension scheme (conditions apply)
- Life assurance
- Free parking
- Cycle to work scheme
- Free entry to all our centres
