We’re looking for four enthusiastic residential volunteers to join us at the RSPB’s largest nature reserve, Forsinard Flows, March-October 2024. This is a brilliant opportunity for conservationists at the beginning of their careers to gain practical skills and valuable experience in the heart of the Flow Country, a rare and internationally important blanket bog. Our summer volunteers are involved in many aspects of reserve work including survey and monitoring, research, data management, people engagement, peatland restoration and practical land management. This role involves independent working on tricky terrain, sometimes in difficult weather conditions. We provide training in the various elements of the placements, to enable you to learn and develop in the role and help us conserve this fantastic habitat. Accommodation is provided for free in our modern field centre with private rooms and communal living areas/bathrooms. Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park Youth Committee is a group of dedicated young people aged between 14-26 years old who are passionate about the National Park and making a difference. To join our National Park Youth Committee, you need to be: 14-26. Passionate about the National Park and want to be an ambassador for it. Living either in or out with the National Park, as membership is ideally 50:50 split. Willing to take part in meaningful discussions with National Park staff and Board members on issues important to young people. Excited about the idea of taking part in projects that help us to meet the National Park’s aims, like tackling the nature and climate crises. Able to commit to a minimum of 4 meetings a year, 1 of which will be in person in the National Park. We’re particularly looking for young people who: Are in college, university, starting their career or volunteering in nature, climate and sustainability focused areas. Have ideas and ambition to drive forward youth-led action in the National Park. Have an interest in governance and decision making, and can represent the voice of young people in Board meetings. Scottish National Badger Survey. We are looking for volunteers in selected areas around Scotland, to carry out surveys of allocated 1km squares, looking for signs of badgers and badger setts. We will provide full training and support. The survey is a repeat of our survey of 15 years ago. We aim to find out whether numbers of badger setts and territories are expanding or decreasing, and whether the habitats they choose to build setts in is changing. Volunteers are required in a variety of areas across the country. Time: 2 hour online training, 1 day field training, 3 - 4 days to undertake to fully survey a 1km survey square. I Bike is a successful project delivered by Sustrans, enabling more people to choose cycling, walking and wheeling instead of the car. As a volunteer, you would support your I Bike Officer with outdoor activities for pupils at local schools. You don’t need any cycling experience; we’re looking for people who enjoy being outside and helping children and young people to learn new skills and become more active. We are looking for two Volunteer Rangers to join us at the Glencoe NNR. This is a great opportunity to gain practical skills and valuable experience in one of Scotland's most iconic nature reserves. As a Ranger, you'll be involved in various tasks such as footpath maintenance, leading educational events, conducting ecological surveys, installing fencing, promoting SOAC, interacting with visitors and staffing the information desk. The positions runs from March 26 to October 2024. Preference will be given to candidates who are available for the full season. During breeding season 1 April - 15 August, we need disturbance volunteers to help the seasonal warden. Nest disturbance by dogs is the main issue for the ground nesting birds on Foulney. This is unique opportunity to learn more about coastal wildlife and improve your ‘people person’ skills. This programme is designed for volunteers who want to spend 10 weeks in the wilderness, visiting and doing projects in protected areas around Iceland. The Environmental Agency recruits directly the volunteers between February and March each year. The placement starts at the beginning of June with a training week in footpath maintenance and design, using stones and timber. Trail Teams will do projects involving building, repairing and maintaining small bridges, boardwalks, drains and stone steps in remote natural trails. Trail Team support the activities of local rangers, take part in wilderness restoration actions, such as the removal of invasive plants and obliteration of tracks left by illegal off-road driving.
