About The Service

Bute Park is a major visitor destination and popular city-centre park. The park receives over 2.5 million visits per year and hosts a busy calendar of events and community activity. The park is highly regarded and holds a Green Flag Award. An opportunity has opened up to apply for the rewarding role of Bute Park Ranger. This post is part of the dedicated Bute Park Management Team, which are ordinarily based within the park at the Bute Park Visitor Centre*

About the job

Working as the dedicated Bute Park Ranger is a fantastic opportunity for a talented individual who is passionate about nature and the outdoors.

You will be a visible presence within the park and provide a front-line service to park users to ensure their visit is safe and enjoyable.

Your primary objectives are:

  • To ensure the park is systematically patrolled and issues are reported and resolved.
  • To ensure high standards of site maintenance and presentation are delivered with support from the wider team.
  • To pass on knowledge and information about the site, which will enhance people's enjoyment of their visit.

You will gain a unique understanding of the park and knowledge about how it changes through the seasons. You will use this to educate and inform others. You will take a lead on identifying opportunities for conservation and habitat improvements and work alongside others to get practical work done. This will include working with volunteers from a variety of backgrounds and confidence and ability to work with the general public is essential.

You will also help promote the park's code of conduct and support visitors to use the park in a considerate and safe way. You will enforce site rules in a firm but friendly manner and use education and information to help change people's behaviour where necessary. You will facilitate activities by others on site (e.g. contractors and event organisers) and will work alongside colleagues within the Parks Service and partner organisations to meet common objectives.

What We Are Looking For From You

We are looking for a person with a diverse set of skills and a passion for the role and the opportunities it offers. Being able to prioritise and manage your time and workload is essential to ensure to breadth of the job description is met. You will need to work effectively with others to get things done so being able to form constructive relationships with others is critical to success.

Working in an urban park located in the city-centre means you will be exposed to a wide range of individuals. You will encounter regular park users, occasional visitors, families, school groups, international tourists, as well as people who are vulnerable and have complex needs. You are “eyes and ears” of the park and your job will involve a lot of communication and coordination with others.

The post work pattern will be agreed in advance with the successful applicant. Some consideration will be given to their individual circumstances, however the post will require work on weekends, bank holidays and during school holidays since these are the peak times for public park use and organised activities.

You will be issued with a branded uniform, smart phone and radio.

You will have access to a wealth of training via the Cardiff Council Academy and also external providers where there is a business case.

This is a designated ‘Welsh essential’ post. However, to meet the essential criteria you must either have the ability to speak Welsh at ‘entry’ level 1, or evidence of potential to learn Welsh and a commitment to undertaking training to reach this level of competency within 12 months. Please refer to the Description of Welsh Skills Ability document attached to this advert.

A full valid driving licence is an essential requirement of this position.
