Would you like to work on a nationally important wetland site managing habitats for breeding black-necked grebe and willow tit?

The RSPB Dee Estuary team are seeking a dynamic and motivated Assistant Warden to join the reserves team, based predominantly at Woolston Eyes Nature Reserve, you will also spend some time during the spring and summer months working at our Dee Estuary reserves’ Dee Estuary reserves.

What’s the role about

This role will be incredibly varied, and you’ll carry out a range of tasks including- delivering habitat management, species surveying, supervising contractors,  engaging with stakeholders, maintenance tasks, and managing some amazing volunteers.

We are seeking an individual with experience of practical habitat management, working with and inspiring volunteers, surveying birds and other taxa, working with machinery, and with good reserves infrastructure and estate maintenance skills.

The applicant should also have a good knowledge of natural history, with excellent bird identification skills.

They should also be a strong team player with excellent organisational, communication, practical and interpersonal skills. Ready to inspire and motivate to achieve great things for nature

 Key areas of work will include:

  • Habitat management as defined by the reserve’s management plan.
  • Leading and inspiring the reserves volunteer team.
  • Monitoring of key species and habitats.
  • Maintenance of infrastructure for visitors to ensure a positive visitor experience.
  • Maintaining high standards of health and safety to minimise risk to the RSPB and to ensure understanding and compliance of health and safety while undertaking tasks.
  • Maintenance of machinery to ensure they are operating safely and efficiently.
  • Maintenance of infrastructure to ensure it is fit for purpose.
  • Collaborate with a wide range of stakeholders from wider team members, neighbours, reserve ecologists etc.
  • General administration and report writing associated with all the above to ensure admin and reports are up to date and systematically organised.

What we need from you

  • Energy, adaptability and the desire to achieve.
  • The ability to work unsupervised, within a team or leading a team.
  • Experience of practical land management and delivering estate management works.
  • Well organised approach to work including developing and effective prioritisation of workplans and workloads.
  • Experience in safe operation and maintenance of machinery, tools and equipment.
  • Knowledge of lowland wetland habitat management.
  • Experience of biological monitoring.
  • Implementing and updating health and safety records and assessment.
  • Lantra or equivalent qualifications in Chainsaw, brushcutter, pesticides (PA1 and PA2), tractor driving is desirable.
  • Knowledge of the requirements of agri-environment and cross-compliance regulations is desirable.
