The Lizard Peninsula in Cornwall has some of the most dramatic coastline in the region. It is an extremely important and diverse area for wildlife, with cliffs and heathland designated as Sites of Special Scientific Interest for their flora and fauna, including many rare species.   The unspoilt coastal landscape, draws hundreds of thousands of visitors per year. The National Trust manages many of the key visitor attractions locally, including over 10 miles of the South West Coast Path, the Penrose Estate, Mullion Harbour, the cliffs that comprise the Most Southerly Point of the British Mainland, and the tranquil Helford River woods.

Role summary This role provides a great opportunity to work outdoors with a dynamic ranger team in a beautiful setting. Through this opportunity you will develop new skills and practical experience in coast & countryside conservation and access work.
What's involved?  • Expected start date early February 2020
• Helping the Lizard ranger team with practical work to keep the coast paths and countryside in great condition and to a high standard of conservation and presentation.
• Helping the ranger team with the maintenance of holiday cottage grounds and gardens.
• Using tools, machinery and equipment and maintaining them in a safe working order in accordance with legal requirements.
• Undertaking tasks and activities on all types of terrain and ground conditions in a variety of weather conditions.
• Being flexible and able to adapt to changing circumstances and plans.
• Maintaining good relationships with people who share the land.
• Learning more about The Lizard Peninsula, its history, landscape, nature and archaeology.
• Sharing what’s great about The Lizard with local people and visitors; helping people understand why we need to take care of special places; providing people with a warm welcome and helping them have a safe and enjoyable day.
• Opportunities to assist with events and education projects across the Lizard Peninsula.
• Getting to know health and safety procedures in countryside work.
• AND there might be some other activities that are of interest to you, that we could use your help with….
This role will suit you if you are... • Outdoorsy, whatever the weather’s doing.
• Reasonably fit and healthy – you don’t need to be Bear Grylls but you’ll do a lot of walking and practical tasks.
• An excellent communicator, willing to get involved and work as part of a team.
• Flexible and able to adapt to changing circumstances and plans.
• Keen to work with people and animals.
• Passionate about the countryside and keen to find out the best spots on The Lizard.
• Looking for a detailed and immersive experience of the National Trust or the sector.
• Interested in understanding how we care for our places at National Trust over time.
• In order to get the most out of this role you’ll be available to volunteer for around 30 hrs / week (by negotiation) for a suggested time of 6 months. Expected start date February 2020
By getting involved you could • Spend time outdoors in one of Cornwall’s unique places.
• Join a friendly and varied team and make some new friends.
• Learn new countryside skills and help look after important landscapes for future generations.
• Train with experienced rangers and (depending on work plans) there may be opportunities to access more formal courses e.g. first aid, brushcutter use.
• Learn about the Lizard’s unique history, landscape and its wildlife and conservation.
• Use your passion for the outdoors and share your knowledge and enthusiasm
with both locals and visitors.

Extra Information
• We’ll help you get to know the Lizard, how you can help and how you will work with the rest of the team – with induction and training.
• We provide equipment to be safe and confident on your role.
• We’ll cover agreed expenses for your travel between home and the Lizard.
• We can offer shared accommodation during your time here so that you can undertake this role. Volunteers often find some local work to cover additional expenses, such as food costs.
